MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Board of Governors of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity unanimously voted to exercise its authority to indefinitely terminate and revoke the Charters of the Lambda Phi Chapter and the Lambda Phi Alumni Association - both located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Effective immediately, the chapter and alumni association shall no longer be considered in good standing with the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity.
On August 15, 2023, the Lambda Phi Chapter notified the Board of Governors of its decision to begin initiating women and voluntarily join the Alpha Delta Phi Society, an independent and legally separate gender-inclusive organization not affiliated with the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity. The Fraternity has had a historic presence at MIT since 1976, so it with great sadness that the Board of Governors was forced to take this action today.
The Fraternity’s all-male status as a brotherhood of college and university men is based upon our Founder’s vision and its right to association guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity defines its own membership criteria and maintains its all-male character consistent with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.
The Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity is an independent and legally separate all-male organization not affiliated with the Alpha Delta Phi Society.
